Description:
I am selling a few select rifles out of my personal collection. This one is a very fine W.J. Jeffery big bore bolt action rifle in the venerable .404 Jeffery cartridge. Many claim that the .404 Jeffery is the perfect Safari rifle cartridge as it is soft shooting while being hard hitting offering the hunter adequate range and power for a wide vairaty of quarry from plains game to up to elephant.
This rifle features a single square bridge magnum mauser action with M70 style safety and “SAFE” in gold. It has H&H scope mounts installed with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.25-4x24mm scope and an extra set of matching 30mm rings. Both sets of beautifully cased colored rings are engraved with the maker’s name, caliber, and rifle serial number. The 25” barrel includes a vintage style Jeffery quarter rib housing one standing and two folding leaf express sights regulated to 50, 150, and 200 yards respectively. The front sight is banded hooded ramp with single bead and flip up moon sight. This rifle features beautiful scroll engraving on the floorplate, grip cap as well as a Tudor rose on both case-colored recoil bars and the bolt knob. The engraving features gold inlaid “Cal. 404” on the floorplate, Gold serial number on the trigger guard and fine gold lines on the rear sight leaves. The stock is a nicely figured dark walnut with rich color, ebony forend tip, pancake style cheekpiece, gold oval, and inletted rear sling swivel. Front sling swivel is properly barrel mounted.
LOP is 14-1/4" and weight is 10.75 lbs scoped (9.8 lbs unscoped). Overall the rifle is in Exc/VG+ condition showing only some slight age and wear on the metal and handling marks on the wood but having been fired very little. This is an exceptional example of a classic British big game rifle in a wonderful big bore cartridge executed by its namesake British maker.
