Description:
SOLD.  Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with 6" Barrel and the desirable 6 shot cylinder (most were 5 shots).  These were extremely popular with soldiers during the Civil War who purchased them by the thousands as personal carry weapons.  See Photo of Union Soldier posing with his 6 shot 1849 with the same barrel length.   Serial number is in the 202,000 range which dates this one to early 1862 production.  The barrel has the desirable HARTFORD address instead of New York.   Sam Colt switched to his barrel markings to his HARTFORD factory address in the late 1850's up to about the time the Civil War began in mid-1861 which is widely accepted as a way to appease his Southern customers who viewed NY as the central to the Abolititionist movement.  While Colt quickly changed the Hartford address back to New York on his barrels on models like the 1851 Navy and Colt 1860 Army, the change did not occur as abruptly on the 1849 pocket...either that or he already had a large quantity of barrels on hand that were already marked "Hartford".   What's quite rare about this gun is that it's in 202,000 range which is very late for a Hartford barrel address and it  has the 6 shot cylinder which started showing up in the 200,000 ranges for this model.  I've been collecting for almost 40 years and been a dealer for over 20 and bought and sold MANY '49 Pockets but  this is the first time I've encountered a 6 shot variation with a Hartford address.  Norm Flayderman wrote in his book on Antique American Firearms that a collector could spend a lifetime collecting nothing but variations of the 1849 Pocket Model which was reached the highest production of any Colt Model during the 19th century at 340,000 units sold from 1850-1873.  That said, this is not an easy variation to find.
Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Very Good with 100% all matching numbers.  See Photos.  The Trigger Guard retaining 85% of its original silver plating with 65% on the backstrap.  The grips are in Fine Condition and retain 97% original varnish with just a few minor handling marks and perfect fit to the frame and straps.  The rest of the metal surfaces are a light silvery grey with good edges and very good markings.  The cylinder still has a good 80-85% discernable scene of the stagecoach robbery.  Good mechanics.  The wedge is tight as the barrel to frame lock-up has no wobble or play.  Bore is Good to Very Good with nice strong rifling and just a few light scattered pits which is what you're going to see on most black powder era  revolvers used in the Civil War.  No rings or bulges.  Just a nice example of an 1849 pocket with 3 very desirable features....6", 6 shot, Hartford Address.  Antique, Pre-1898 Production No FFL Required.  No international sales, no sales to Chicago, NYC, or NJ.  $20.00 shipping.  3 Day inspection.
