<<<<SOLD>>>>> A U.S. rifle chambered for .58 cal.,with a cadet 30'' barrel with a bright near excellent bore. This interesting rifle-musket, original produced by Springfield Armory, was likely converted for Cadet use similar to many ''cadet'' rifles around the later half of the nineteenth century. The metal surfaces have aged to a lightly-oxidized dull gray patina with a few scattered light handling marks and some scribe lines in the top of the barrel from when the front sight was relocated. The lockplate and hammer retain about 95% retailer-applied blue showing some fine cleaning striations on the lockplate and some freckles of light oxidation overall. The top of the breech is dated 1862 and the left quarter flat shows a ''V / P'' over a softened (eagle head) proof. Muzzle of the barrel has been arsenal crowned. The lockplate is dated 1861 behind the hammer and is marked with a Federal Eagle ahead while ''U.S. / SPRINGFIELD'' is below the bolster and the buttplate tang is marked ''US / 26''. The American black walnut stock rates about fine withpossibly -added finish and some scattered light handling marks. The stock has been very nicely arsenal shortened with the steel forend cap moved rearwards and the ramrod channel nicely enlarged to accept the retaining swell of the shortened cupped tulip-head ramrod. There is a crisp ''85'' on the right side of the buttstock ahead of the buttplate, the sling swivels and original sights are intact and while the hammer screw is missing the action remains very strong and crisp. Would make a very good re-enactor shooter. When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
