Description:
Smith & Wesson Double Action first model in .44 Russian caliber. (One of the earliest and very popular center-fire cartridges. A favorite with target shooters also granddaddy of the .44 magnum.)  This model offered for sale by S&W from 1881 to 1913. A total of 54,668 First Models were made.   They are distinguished by their unusual  looking cylinders utilizing double cylinder stops. The serial number is present on the cylinder but obscured on the butt (see photo). This revolver originally chrome plated,  now has about five percent or less finish remaining. It has nice, well fitting pearl grips. There is a tiny chip on the right grip plus some corrosion on the inter grip frame (see photo).  Barrel is six inches and shows full length sharp rifling along with some corrosion. It weighs 36.9 ounces. The action works fine and is tight. With a gunsmith's ok it could be a good shooter for hand loaders.  (Black powder or equivalent only, of course!)  Not the most popular revolver in the Old West but alive and present never-the-less.  John Wesley Hardin was reported to be carrying a S&W .44 Double Action when he was killed in an El Paso saloon in 1895. Frames are pre-1899 manufacture, no FFL required.

P.S.   Hard to find nineteenth century S&W .44 caliber revolvers under $2,000.
