The barrel of this rifle retains about 95-97% original blue some mild silvering at the muzzle, and a crisp "7 M.M-SM." caliber stamp just ahead of the lightly colored, non-standard handguard. The barrel bands retain a commensurate amount of original blue, and the rear band has a sloping top contour, similar to a carbine band, in order to accommodate the nose of the handguard. The action retains about 90-95% of the original, muted color case-hardening with some trace fading along the high edges. The hammer, breechblock and action pins retain about 90% of the original blue, with plum-brown fading on the balance. The walnut stock and forend retain most of their original dark oil finish, and have scattered light handling marks and blemishes. The handguard has a crack at the nose running back from a brass screw just behind the barrel band. The characteristic Remington Factory Collection brass tags were removed from the belly of the buttstock, but their outlines (and the tack holes for the rectangular plate) are still plainly visible. No cleaning rod is present, the sling swivels and military sights are intact and the action functions fully. This is a very nice Model 1897 No. 5 Rolling Block, and would make a great addition to any collection.
