Description:
General Specs: Winchester, Year 1905, .405 WCF, 8lb 5.3oz, LOP 12 13/16"
Serial Number: 54416

The Winchester 1895 rifle is most commonly associated today with former President Theodore Roosevelt.

When Theodore Roosevelt embarked on his 1909 African safari he took along two Winchester 1895s both chambered in .405 WCF. He praised the Model 1895 in his book  African Game Trails and referred to his rifle as the "medicine gun for lions."
The last of the lever actions to be designed by John Browning, the 1895 was the first Winchester to use a box magazine located beneath the action instead of the more common tube magazine thus making it safe to use the modern spitzer type bullets.  At the time of its introduction the 1895 was considered the strongest of lever actions and well capable of handling the heaviest military and hunting rounds of the day. Just over four hundred thousand 1895 in various calibers were produced with manufacturing ending in 1940.

Our offering is a great example of the classic 1895 chambered for the powerful .405 WCF, factory fitted with a Lyman adjustable rear peep and mid barrel express sights. Overall the bluing is aged to a brown patina with hints of the original rich bluing remaining on the sun shaded areas of the lever mechanism. Case color of 42% and a barrel fading from 80% blue to a hand rubbed gray towards the receiver highlight a well lived life of care and attention.  This gun has never been refinished or adulterated and wears its age with pride. This 1905 production gun includes a Cody letter.
