Description:
Early R.G. Owen custom rifle, Springfield action in 30-06 features unbelievable detail and engraving. SN# 883, barrel marked "R.G. Owen Sauquoit. N.Y. CAL 30-06 883" . The " Early Sauquoit Owens" as they were known were made around 1925. If you look at the pattern of engraving work over the entire rifle it follows Kornbrath style engraving, and as history lists Kornbrath did the majority of engraving jobs during this period. Please satisfy to your study. The only other engraver he used at this time was August Heym in Germany. This rifle is in incredible and original condition. Engraved Trap door buttplate, gorgeous stock featuring the signature arrowhead, total LOP of 13 3/8" to a checker engraved trigger. Beautifully executed cheekpiece. All screws engraved, floorplate reads "R.G. Owen Sauquoit. N.Y." Fully Engraved grip cap and horn front stock tip. Engraved barrel band sling mount, engraved ramped and hooded front sight. "GRIFFIN & HOWE, NEW YORK" engraved Detachable scope mount with thumb release levers to engraved rings holding a LEUPOLD ALASKAN 4 Scope with a duplex reticle. Bore and crown are excellent, always stored w a snap cap released. 8.93 lbs exactly as shown also engraved on bottom edge and marked and engraved peep sight correct to brass front bead. Michael Petrovs' book Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century covers Robert G Owen in the very first chapter with "representing the pinnacle of pre war custome rifle making in America" and "Owens were among the most costly custom rifles in the United States".
