Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Handsome Purdey island lock hammer gun with 28” sleeved nitro steel barrels, rebounding locks, highly figured English walnut buttstock and maker's leather case with maker’s label. The round body action has very nicely filed fences, serpentine dolphin head hammers, and house style engraving on the locks, hammers, and frame. Purdey island lock hammerguns were known for their great handling and popularized by the famous Edwardian shot, Lord Ripon. Ripon shot Purdey island locks all his life; way past the time when hammerless models dominated. What stories it could tell. Overall weight is 6lb 8oz.   ***   Purdey number 8632 was made in 1872. Its 28” nitro steel barrels were sleeved in 1987, have 2-1/2" chambers, extractors, and are topped by a raised concave game style rib. The rib is inscribed “James Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street London”. The right barrel is bored 0.728 with a constriction of 0.011 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. The left barrel is bored 0.729 and has a constriction of 0.025 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032.Bluing is in very good condition.   ***   The replacement stock was crafted in a nicely figured English walnut stock with a checkered butt. Checkering is crisp. The original forearm has a wedge forearm fastener. Checkering has been refreshed but shows some wear. There are some handling marks on the buttstock including a repaired hairline crack and the forearm but nothing major. The stock dimensions are 14-1/2” to a checkered butt by 1-3/8" by 2-1/8". Cast off about 1/4" for the righthand shot.   ***   The period leather case has a maker’s label and a medallion on the top of the lid. The case shows wear on the exterior as does the interior lining.  ***   Interestingly enough, back action non-ejector hammer guns make great travel guns. Without ejectors they are less likely to have problems and easy to repair if they do. They are also lighter and great handling. This gun shows some wear but is in solid mechanical condition ready for more years of service. Perhaps its time for you to add to the story of this great gun.   ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described.
