Description:
For your consideration is this 90-year-old, elaborately engraved, and very attractive German pre-war side-by-side made by Friedrich Wilhelm Heym (in April 1931).  Serial Number 6100.

The condition of this gun is 99% (either 99% Factory Original OR 99% Factory Quality Restoration).  On 3/25/21, I called Doug Turnbull to see if his company had restored this gun.  He said "no".  I asked him for his opinion from personal experience and the photos.  He "thinks" this gun has "most likely" received a Factory Quality Restoration at some point in it's past.  I purchased the gun "as-is" and have done nothing to it.  All I can tell you is the gun is gorgeous.

All engraving and barrel markings are very sharp.  Screws are in perfect condition, showing no evidence of having been turned, and are aligned “north / south”.  The case colors are brilliant.  The wood is beautiful and checkering is sharp.  The butt plate, pistol grip cap, and forearm insert are all made from horn.  The horn butt plate shows some minor insect damage (which is common for these old guns).  The triggers have an engraved checkered pattern on them.  The gun has sideclips, cocking indicators, and sling swivels front and rear.  The muzzle end of top and bottom ribs (the two small triangular areas) are “hash mark” engraved.  There are NO handling marks.

The Grade 4A was a side-by-side (boxlock with sideplates) made for the American Market.  I’ve seen around a dozen of these over the years.  The majority were 12 gauge, a few were 20 gauge, and the one for sale here is the only 16 gauge I’ve had the pleasure to encounter.  The wood checkering came in two patterns.  This pattern has a "wooden tear drop" behind the sideplates (the other patten has a small horn insert behind the sideplates).

The Friedrich Wilhelm Heym Company began in 1865 and closed their doors at the end of World War II in April 1945.  The founder had set the goal for himself and his Company to be among the best gun makers in Suhl.

Any collector of fine side-by-sides and/or Pre-War German Guns will enjoy having this gun in their collection.
