Chambered in the Original 45-70 GOVT
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1882 by the Springfield Armory. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
“1878” dated lock. A circle “P” is stamped on the underside of the stock. This example has a clear SWP/1882 Cartouche on the left stock flat. Samuel W. Porter was a well-known Ordnance Inspector at the Springfield Armory during this era. Though this Trapdoor started out as a rifle, it has since been shortened to carbine length.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is bright throughout with sharp rifling. This example sports a solid stock with a legible cartouche on the left wrist. A great piece of American history that looks like it was used long after it left government service!
