Description:
Euaebio Arizage, Placencia. Spain. Best grade sidelock ejector 12 bore game-gun. The 28 ½” chopper lump light weight high strength nickel steel barrels have 2 ¾” chambers and are bored full and modified. Barrels are marked “Ballota EC-4” which means “nut” and identifies it as nickel steel alloy especially developed for gun barrels by the Echevarria foundry. This gun is in like-new condition. Perfect blue and best hand rubbed stock finish. As is the case with almost all best grade Spanish guns, it is based on the excellent Holland & Holland action and locks. Said locks have intercepting sears and are beautifully polished like a fine watch. It has Purdy double under bolts and a hidden 3rd fastener. The action is finely engraved in the classic rose & scroll pattern. The maker’s mark is inlayed in gold on the top lever. The highly figured stock is beautifully finished and measures 14 ¼” from the articulated front trigger to an old English Pachmayr pad. Drop at comb is 1 ½ and drop at heel 2 ½”. This appears to be the model 42.
In 1908 Euaebio Arizage of Guipuzcoa established business in Placencia in specializing in best English style guns. Any option could be made to order. Seven different models were stock. Euaebio was a contemporary of Victor Sarasqueta and probably made this gun in the 1960s. Jack O'Conner, a well known sportsman and gun writer, bought 3 Arizaga guns for which he had high praise. Only the single triggers did not work well.
There were several Spanish gun makers named Arizega who were probably his sons. Bruxton’s Guide, dated 1965, indicates E. Arizaga was a major maker. By 1972 it was listed as “Suc. de Euaebio Arizago, S.R.C.; Placencia de las Armas”. From 1973 to ’79 Spain was in an extream depression. Many gun-makers went out of business. Twenty remaining makers, including Suc. de Euaebio Arizage, merged into “DIARM, S.A.” Now a new Spanish gun of this grade sells for $17,000, an Italian one for $25,000 and an English one for $50,000.
