Colt Model 1860 Army 44 caliber percussion revolver, 6 shot cylinder, 8" round barrel with brass front sight, walnut grips, single action, serial number 72075, made 1862, blued and case hardened finish with steel back strap and brass trigger guard. Sub inspector markings include a "K" on the back strap just behind the hammer, an "H" on the trigger guard just behind the trigger bow and an "A" on the cylinder. The left grip cartouche is not legible. The "JT" cartouche of inspector John Taylor is clear on the right grip. "W W Davidson" is lightly signed in period font on the bottom of the left grip. There are two possibilities for this name per the Civil War Geneology database, considering it is a Cavalry revolver. The first would be William W Davidson, Private, Company H of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry (Union Army), who enlisted 8/30/1862 and mustered out 2/22/1863 due to disability. The other option is William W Davidson, Private, Company C of the Mississippi 2nd Partisan Rangers (Confederate Army), who enlisted 9/2/1862 with no discharge date given. Obviously having full martial markings, this revolver started out in the hands of an Union Cavalry soldier. The 15th PA operated mostly in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia, and would never have crossed paths with the 2nd Mississippi, because after skirmishing in Mississippi it saw action in various conflicts in North Georgia and Alabama. Some of the men were captured in the fight at Selma, and only a remnant surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. Per the Springfield Research Survey, the closest recorded 1860 Army to this one is serial number 72043 issued to Company L of the 1st Alabama (Union) Cavalry. It is also known that Union troops were not allowed to mark their names on their weapons and would be fined for "destruction of government property" if they did. Conversely, the Confederates quite often marked their names and/or initials on weapons they gleaned from the Union to show ownership and prevent their buddies from stealing them. Thus I am going to put the puzzle together in this way: this revolver was initially issued to a member of the Union 1st Alabama Cavarly, which did come into direct contact with the 2nd Mississippi in Mississippi and Alabama, was captured by W W Davidson during some altercation, and used by him for whatever length of time he remained with the 2nd Mississippi. The overall condition leans toward Southern use as well - Deep South humidity often turned the blued finishes of any firearm to a dark chocolate color, which this revolver has. There are multiple dings around the wedge on the right side of the barrel. The grips are smooth and have been lightly cleaned. The action does function properly, locking up tightly and indexing correctly at full cock but having slight play with the hammer at rest. Likewise the brass was lightly cleaned at one point and is starting to regain its patina. All the original nipples are intact and undamaged. Except for traces of one, the cylinder stop pins are completely worn away. The loading lever has side-to-side play. The wedge is mismatched from a "campfire swap" and is numbered 7339, fitting loosely and easily removed, otherwise all the numbers match in whole or part on the cylinder, bottom of grip, trigger guard, frame, and cylinder pin. The bore is good with scattered typical black powder pitting but no rings or bulges and no deep pits, fairly decent rifling. All in all it grades NRA Antique Very Good and will make a nice addition to any Civil War and/or Colt firearm collection.
This is basically a no finish revolver with all metal surfaces now gray, traces of blue on protected underside of barrel and very light hints of case colors on frame when the sun is shining. Very good walnut grips showing normal use but no abuse and no splits or cracks. Mellow, uncleaned brass. For the most part, the markings are still clear except for the barrel addrees, which shows wear due to being holstered (as does the muzzle, which shows wear on left edge). Serial number matches in whole or in part everywhere it should - bottom of grip, trigger guard, frame, cylinder, cylinder pin. No number on wedge. Bore is fair with consistent rifling but typical wear and light scattered black powder pitting, no rings or bulges. All nipples are intact and undamaged. Cylinder stops are mostly worn down from use. Action is tight with positive clicks and no slop, indexes correctly each time the hammer is cocked. Cylinder retains 50% of the original scene. Wedge screw has a small piece broken off but the slot is still good and it still can be removed. All in all grades NRA Antique Good and is an honest example of a desirable Colt 1861 Navy revolver.
