Description:
This is an original Civil War CDV of Lt. James Watson Snedaker taken in Clyde, NY and likely the last image of him living. Born in 1839, he joined the 27th NY Infantry as a corporal in Company B in May 1861 at Lyons, NY (Lyons and Clyde are two Upstate NY towns very close together between Syracuse and Rochester). After mustering out in May 1863, he joined up again as a Lieutenant in the 111th NY Infantry, and it is in that uniform this CDV was taken. He was killed in action on 5/5/1864 at The Wilderness. I have included photos of all pertinent paperwork I could find, including a brief bio from "Find-a-Grave", a copy of his pension that was submitted by his mother, battle maps of 1st Bull Run and Gaines' Mill, each at which he was wounded in action while with the 27th, a battle map of The Wilderness showing the 111th on the extreme left of the Union line engaged with Confederates from A.P. Hill's Corps, and regimental histories of both infantry units. The GAR Post #173 in Clyde, NY was named "Snedaker" in his honor as well as his brother Albert, who died at the infamous Andersonville Prison while a POW. Albert enlisted 1/18/1864 in Cicero, NY intoCompany D, 111th NY Infantry to be with his brother and most likely saw him killed. Albert was taken prisoner 5/18/64 at Spotsylvania Court House and died 8/15/64.
