Description:
This W. & C. Scott round-body back-action 12-gauge, which was manufactured in 1872, has a graceful elegance that is difficult to achieve with a bar-action design. This may be why Scott continued to manufacture back-action guns until 1897, even though bar-action guns came to dominate the market in the 1870s. This is not one Scott’s most expensive shotguns, but its classical lines make it arguably one of its most beautiful.
The well-figured English walnut on this gun is in fine condition, not only on the outside but also behind the locks. The checking is crisp. The engraving on the receiver and locks is pristine, and the locks themselves are as elegant and well-built as the rest of the gun. The 30-inch barrels are made of British laminated-steel, which was among the best available at the time. They have 2-3/4-inch chambers and bright bores. The exteriors of the barrels are flawless, as refinished. As was the industry standard until around 1875, neither barrel has any constriction. [This did not inhibit the gun from crumpling the pair of Greater Canada geese shown in the second picture using RST low-pressure shells with # 4 bismuth shot.] The bore diameters at 9 inches from the breech are both .731 inches. The outside diameter at the muzzle of the right barrel is .805 and the left .795. The wall thicknesses of the right barrel at 9 inches from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .026/.030/.030, and at the middle of the barrel are .035/.038/.037. The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .025/.025/.029 and .035/.035/.040, respectively.
The LOP from the font trigger to the end of the original steel butt plate is 14-1/4 inches. The DAC is 2 inches and at the heel 3 inches. The cast is 1/8-inch off for the right-handed shooter. The gun weighs 7 pounds and 5 ounces. It is on-face and locks up tightly. Both triggers pull at 7 pounds. All serial numbers, 4856, match.
The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on multiple occasions on the range and in the field using low-pressure shells produced by RST for Damascus barreled shotguns. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one almost hundred and fifty years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and all shipping costs.
