This is a fairly late production rifle as serial numbers didn't go much beyond 10,000. Later rifles also have an ebony inlay wedge in the end of the forend schnable compared to the much more common metal forend tips of earlier rifles. The barrel is 30" and has the correct Remington crown where the octagon ends at the muzzle are beveled giving the end of the barrel, when viewed directly at the bore, a distinctly round look- a good way to tell if a barrel has been cut, if the muzzle shows sharp octagon points, it's been cut. The barrel has the correct "REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, NY" stamping on the top along with the caliber "38.55" stamped correctly on the bottom of the barrel ahead of the forearm. The barrel is serial numbered under the forearm and matches the receiver number. The barrel also has the original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar and is mated with a Lyman marked /patented front blade/ivory bead front sight. The barrel blue has aged and is very heavily thinning to gray. The receiver has silvered with some light case color mainly on the right side around the lever and fine correct markings on the lower left side. The upper tang has a Lyman tang sight. The stock is fine and solid with good factory checkering at the wrist that shows some honest wear only and tight wood to metal fit. The forend is also fine overall. Both the stock and forend show better than standard walnut with some nice fiddleback grain pattern. The decorative factory ebony wedge inlay in the forend tip is intact. The action is very tight and the bore is excellent. These Hepburn single shot rifles are becoming very difficult to find.
