Description:
This is an original silver medal and ribbon with identification along the edge: "BURG. S.W. COMBRINCK". The silver has developed an attractive tarnish over the years with a blue tint towards the edge, and a coppery color in the center. The medal is mounted on an old card stock display with a faded and flaked original photograph of Burger Combrinck in formal attire. The bottom of the card reads: "BURG. SCHALK WILLEM COMBRINCK. SERVED UNDER GEN. PIETER ARNOLDUS CRONJE." The display is itself housed in a modern Riker Box along with an enameled South African War Veterans Association lapel pin in red, blue and orange. As a soldier under Piet Cronje, Combrinck took part in the Siege of Mafeking, the Battle of the Modder River, and Magersfontein. A photocopy of Combrinck's medal authorization (written in Afrikaans) is also included. There are very few examples of Boer militaria in the US, so this is a rare opportunity to acquire an identified Boer medal.
