Scarce 1840s NORWICH Allen & Thurber PEPPERBOX Revolver .31 Caliber ANTIQUE
An Early Double Action Revolver & Favorite of the 49ers!
Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Pepperbox Revolver, made circa the 1840s in Norwich, Connecticut. This is a six-shot revolving pistol and was made during the Norwich Period of Ethan Allen’s career. It features the earlier and scarcer “dog-leg” style of grip frame, as well as flat barrel ribs, and “spangle” or oval escutcheons on the grips. The frame is nicely engraved as is the nipple shield, which has the remnants of a fire blue finish. This was a fancier version when compared with later guns that became perhaps more refined in ergonomics but simplified in their aesthetic.
As these were considered “point and shoot” short range defensive weapons or “belly guns”, the market did not seem to object to the limitation of not having sights. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history.
The overall condition is near fine. Original finish. Excellent action. The bores are all in very good shape. Good grips with expected wear. Here is pepperbox that would have been a trusty tool you’d never have left home without!
