Description:
The Grade A SxS shotgun in 16-gauge is a fairly rare model of Fox shotgun, with only around 2500 being produced in that caliber. It features a highly engraved, color-case-hardened receiver, two sets of blued barrels one 26” long, the other 30”, and a checkered wood buttstock and forearm. It also has auto-ejectors, and an ivory front and mid bead. According to doublegunshop, this one was made in 1923. It is in fair condition given its age of 98 years. It seems that some used the shotgun for its intended purpose. Much of the case-color has been reduced but this is common to all color-case-hardened guns whether they were made in the Old West or in the 21st century. That type of finish is not known for its longevity. The barrels have some bluing loss though they retain their overall finish very well. Both sets of barrels has some light pitting on the bottom in a couple of spots. They both still retain the original 2-9/16” chamber length. The stock has the most wear. There are three notable cracks, two on the top near the upper tang, and one on the lower left side of the pistol grip, near the lower tang. The pistol grip cap can rotate in place and it is believed that it and the spacer beneath are replacements as their dimensions do not match the wood surface beneath them. Although the stock has altered with a rubber recoil pad, the original hard plate is still present in the carrying case (it is too tall for the stock now). The pad spacer is split on the lower section of the pad, but the pad keeps the whole thing together. Application of the correct type of glue would probably fix the split. On the positive side, the lockup between both sets of barrels and the receiver is still very tight, and the bores are in excellent shape. For the 26” barrel, the left bore has an improved cylinder choke and the right a modified choke. These two make the 26” set suitable for a variety of uses. The longer 30” barrel set has two full chokes. As mentioned, this shotgun comes with a carrying case. It also comes with a few accessories for cleaning the barrels.
