Description:
ORIGINAL SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1830 FLINTLOCK WEST POINT CADET MUSKET. .57 caliber with 40” smoothbore Damascus twist barrel (correct for this model) proofed at the breech “P/EAGLE HEAD/V” and stamped on the bayonet lug with the serial number “26”. Lock stamped “SPRING/FIELD/1830” and with “EAGLE/US”. Barrel tang with matching 1830 date stamp. Trigger guard forward tang stamped “EA” probably for Epa Allis a Springfield Armory Sub-Inspector at the time. Butt plate tang stamped “US”. Complete and all original as restored. Original flintlock configuration and with all the original lock parts. Museum quality re-browned parts and lock and hammer re-casehardened with correct muted grey-blue tones. Stock nicely refinished with crisp edges but no cartouche or inspection marks. Screws appear original with slots recut where needed and all re-blued. Perfect working order and excellent bore. Rare with about 300 made in 1830-1831 for the Cadets at West Point Military Academy. Good collection provenance. Expert restoration probably for museum display in the early part of the 20th Century. Priced reasonably for one of the which are seldom seen for sale.
