Description:
This is a very handsome and classy Smith & Wesson Post-War Pre-27 .357 Magnum revolver manufactured sometime between late 1954 and early 1955.  This N-frame revolver is one of the ultimate classic Smith & Wesson models, truly a man's gun.  It is a 100% original and honest gun, with the only change made to it since leaving the factory the addition of some very attractive custom vintage Stag grips.  The Post-War Pre-27 Smith & Wesson revolvers were manufactured from 1947 until 1957, when the revolver officially became the Model 27.  The Pre-27 Model was the top-of-the-line .357 Magnum revolver model from Smith and Wesson.  They were packed with great features like a fully checkered top strap, excellent adjustable Target-style iron sights, a grooved front and rear grip strap, a fluted 6-shot cylinder, and a color case-hardened trigger and hammer.  These Pre-27 guns were built of the very best materials available at that time, and display superb fit and finish and extremely smooth actions.  These S&W's were made during a time when ONE master gunsmith was responsible for assembling the gun and fitting/tuning the action, one gun at a time.  These revolvers were all carefully inspected and test-fired at the factory, and if any little thing was wrong or the gun didn't shoot well it was not sold.  The level of craftsmanship really has to be seen and felt in person to truly be appreciated.   This particular example is serial number S137481 and is fitted with the sought-after 3.5" barrel.  The factory gloss blue finish on this gun is original and glossy, showing some honest wear but no pitting or major damage.  It was obviously shot and carried at one time and shows some small handling marks, the worst of which is a small section of the checkered top strap that has been scraped.  This can be seen in the pictures provided of the top of the revolver, just to the left of the screw holding the rear sight assembly to the gun.  As you can see from the pictures, it does not detract much from the handsome looks of this Smith.  All of the factory markings are crisp and clear, and all of the screws heads in the action look unturned except for some very minor marring of the slot in the cylinder crane screw.  The sideplate shows no evidence of ever having been removed.  The case colored hammer and trigger still show some very nice color, particularly in the more protected areas.  The bore in this Pre-27 is superb, mirror-bright with sharp lands and grooves still showing in the rifling.  There is zero visible pitting or erosion.  The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as clean and free from defects.  The vintage Stag grips on this Smith are VERY handsome and pair with this model perfectly.  Both sides are in excellent shape, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs.  Both grip panels show some very nice contrasting color and "bark", and both sides are perfectly fit to the gun and tight to the grip frame with no wiggle.  As mentioned before, the action on this S&W is extremely smooth and slick.  It is also perfectly "in time" no matter how the gun is operated, single or double-action, fast or slow.  The trigger is excellent, free from any grit, slop, or excessive travel.  It breaks crisply and cleanly with a light pull when operated in single action.  All of the controls on this Pre-27 are in perfect working order, including the adjustments on the rear sight.  We have no doubt that this Smith will still function 100% as it did when it left the factory over 66 years ago, and has more than 80% of it's service life still in it.  If you have been looking for a very cool classic Smith & Wesson to add to your collection this mid '50's production 3.5" inch gun would be a superb choice.  Not only should it continue to be an excellent long-term investment, but as long as it is well cared-for it could be shot at the range or farm without hurting it's value.
