Description:
Sale Pending.  This is a very early example of a Smith and Wesson Model One, 2nd Issue Revolver.  .22 Caliber with 7 shot cylinder and octaongal barrel.  These were extremely popular with soldiers who fought for the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War...as unlike percussion weapons, the small copper cased cartridges these used were basically water-proof.  They were also quite popular in the American West and Mark Twain even wrote a few lines about his in one of his works.    See photos below.   This Model was the successor to the 1st Issue which was numbered 1 through 11,671 from 1857-1860.  The 2nd Issue had some improvements but shared the same serial range as the 1st Issue...which was the world's first cartridge revolver put into mass production.  This one is serial number  12,020 so its within the first 300-500 2nd Issues made in 1860.  Comes with a S&W Factory Letter stating that it shipped in August 1860 to Smith and Wesson's sole distributor, J.W. Storrs of NY, NY on August 11, 1860 with blue and silver plated finish; stocked with rosewood grips.  These earliest examples of the 2nd Issues only have the 1855 and 1859 Patent Dates rolled on the outside of the cylinders with the 1860 Patent added around serial number 20,000.  Barrel has the Smith and Wesson Springfield Mass Address on the top barrel rib.  Matching sub-assembly numbers and grips are numbered to the gun as well.  Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Fine+ Condition with approximatley 70-75% original barrel blue that is mixing with patina in the form of smooth brown freckles.  The cylinder has 75-80% original blue with sharp 1855 and 1859 Patent Dates.  Note how on these early 1st and 2nd Issues that the blue on the barrels is always a little darker deeper blue while the cylinders have a more greenish-blue sapphire hue...like they were blued in nitre salts.  I would love to know the back story on this if anyone knows as we've had many early examples over the years with this slight 2-tone appearance.  The silver on this revolver is fantastic with 98% remaining on the brass frame.  The screws even have a bit of their original blue as well.  Grips are just about perfect with 99% original piano varnish intact with no chips, cracks, or repairs.  Mechanics are good with correct indexing and the barrel latches up to the frame very tightly with no wiggle or play.  The bore is Fine+ Overall...bright and shiny with strong lands and grooves but a few minor pits.  Nice example of one of the earlest 2nd Issues.  Antique, Pre-1898 under Federal Law.  No sales to NYC, Chicago, HI, DC, or NJ.  Buyer must be 21 years of age.  $20.00 Shipping.
