Ames scroll on ricasso, with U.S., 1861, JT (inspectors mark) on opposite ricasso, JT (inspectors mark) on knuckle guard of hilt. Blade has no rust, no pitting, blade edge is fine, fine condition overall. Scabbard has no rust, no pitting, no dents, fine condition overall. The guard has never been removed, as evidenced in the photos. Hilt retains all original leather wrap and twisted brass wire. There is the sightest movement to the grip, approximately 1/32nd inch, hardly noticeable but worth mentioning. This is a rare find, a Fine Condition Ames Manufacturing model 1860 Artillery sword with an early Civil War 1861 date. This sword would have been in the field probably as early as 1st Manassas and served throughout the entire Civil War. To have survived in such Fine Condition with this early date is a true rarity.
