RAMROD BAYONET .45-70 GOVT Antique US SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR Rifle Model 1888
1891 Dated Big Bore Infantry Rifle
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle, made by the Springfield Armory. This rifle was manufactured in 1891, around the Indian the end of the Indian Wars and just after the Wounded Knee massacre. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted.
The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This one has the standard cartouche with inspector Samuel W. Porter’s initials and a date of 1891 within on the left stock flat, as well as the circled “P” on the bottom of the wrist. The barrel is view and proof marked. The breech block is marked “1884” and the butt plate is stamped “US”. In addition, it also bears the stamp of “M.2” on the right side of the butt stock and the number “30” stamped on the top of the comb.
The overall condition is near fine. Original finish with muted case colors. This example sports a solid stock. The action is strong all around. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. This is a must have example piece for any antique collection.
