Description:
This is an exceptionally clean, all-original, and beautiful 1951-production French Military MAS 36 rifle in 7.5 French complete with the original spike bayonet.  This MAS 36 is 100% original and has never been thru a French Arsenal rebuild, nor was it altered by the importer in any way.  The MAS 36 was the main battle rifle for France's Military forces starting in 1937, and remained in service to varying degrees all the way until 1979.  The MAS 36 was manufactured by the French national arsenal, Manufacture d'armes de Saint Etienne from 1937 until 1952.  This bolt-action battle rifle was sized more as a carbine and featured a milled slab-sided receiver cut for stripper-clip loading, a bolt with rear-mounted locking lugs and a unique forward-angled bolt handle, a 22.64" inch barrel, a 5-round internal box magazine, adjustable iron sights consisting of a tangent-type aperture rear sight adjustable from 100 to 1200 meters, a front sight post with a hood or protective ears, an upper barrel band/nosecap with a stacking rod and a spike bayonet housing, a ring-style upper sling mount on the mid-barrel band with a buttstock-mounted sling bar, and spanner-style screws to discourage disassembly by anyone other than a trained armorer.  The MAS 36 quickly proved to be a well-made and durable weapon.  Much more robust than prior French Military rifles but much more compact in size, the MAS 36 was easier to carry and operate for the average soldier.  The shorter barrel did very little to reduce the terminal performance of the 7.5 French cartridge, and it was still capable of excellent accuracy at long ranges.  The MAS 36 was also capable of functioning more reliably than previous models when extremely dirty, in extreme environments, or after taking a lot of punishment.  This particular example is serial number FG42407 and was made in the second to last year of production, 1951.  As mentioned before, it is in excellent condition inside and out and all of the numbered parts are matching (including the bolt).  The factory gray phosphate finish is in beautiful shape, rating 96% plus.  The attractive gray phosphate finish is uniform in color and thickness, and shows only very minor handling/storage marks.  Most of the deductions are from the bolt body and are a result of metal-to-metal contact from the action being worked rather than the rifle being handled or used.  All of the factory markings are crisp and clear, and the import marking on the left side of the receiver is very small and does not detract much from the original overall look of the rifle.  In fact, from any distance outside of a close-up, the import mark looks like a minor area of marring.  The bore in this MAS 36 is spectacular and mirror-bright.  There are zero visible imperfections in this barrel, the rifling still looks brand-new with sharp lands and grooves and there is ZERO visible erosion.  The muzzle is counter-bored, as standard on all all post 1948-production MAS 36's.  The stock set on this MAS is also in superb condition, consistent with the rest of the rifle.  All three pieces of the original stock set are free from any cracks, chips, or major dings/scratches; they are also all a perfect match to each other in ever way.  There is one factory "repair" to the buttstock, just behind the action where a small piece of wood was spliced in where there was likely the eye of a knot.  This was common practice when the stock had a knot or irregular spot rather than throwing away the stock blank, and is completely original and expertly accomplished.  All of the stock hardware is intact, tight, and in excellent condition, and all of the screw heads appear unmolested.  The original spike bayonet with this rifle has a near-flawless original phosphate finish and is free from any damage whatsoever.  The tip of the bayonet still has the original factory-sharpened tip, the shaft of the bayonet is perfectly straight. and the two-way spring-loaded catch is in perfect working condition.  The action on this MAS 36 is precise and still a little tight from being in like-new condition.  In time the action would become smoother as the gun is fired and cycled and the action "breaks-in" and the contact surfaces polish each other smooth.  When in battery, the bolt-to-barrel lock-up is perfectly tight with no wiggle or slop.  All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order, including the adjustable rear sight.  The trigger is quite good for a military rifle, breaking cleanly at the second stage of travel.  There is zero doubt that this rifle will still shoot just as reliably and accurately today as the day it left the MAS factory over 70 years ago!  If you have been looking for a truly "collector grade" MAS 36 rifle for your military arms collection this 1951-production example would be a superb choice.  It would be all but impossible to upgrade from this beauty in any respect.
