Description:
SOLD ***  SAKO Deluxe Forester L579 .243 Win. 24” barrel, pre-Garcia* 98%

This rifle is a premier example of the intermediate action, the Forester, and was ordered in the higher grade, the Deluxe Forester.

This exact rifle is featured on YouTube, Special Guns with Roger Rule, a video listed as Episode 17.

Stock: The stock is Sako’s popular honey color Scandinavian Walnut stock with “A” fancy figure which contrasts beautifully with the dark Rosewood forend tip and Rosewood pistol grip cap set off with Holly wood spacers.  The grip cap is inlaid with a Holly wood caricature of a tree represented the model name. Stock design is the Finnish stylized Monte Carlo comb with sculptured cheekpiece. Checkering is Sako’s skip-line checkering, executed by hand. These deluxe models were always issued with Sako’s brown webbed recoil pad regardless of caliber. It was built in the era when the action was designated L579.

Metal: All metal work is richly blued with high polish. The hammer-forged rifled barrel is Bofors steel and extremely accurate.  As to the other metal work, Sako is famous for its double square bridge receiver finished with fine cross-hatching with integral dovetails for scope mounts, knurled bolt knob, and one piece blued steel trigger guard with contoured profiles.  Floor plate is engraved with the Forester forest symbol as well.  Try to find another maker with this detail.

Condition: This rifle is 98% original and is in extremely fine condition with no screw head damage. Bore is perfect.  This rifle has been to the range and it is a true tack-driver. The checkering on this rifle is still sharp without flaws; weight without scope  6 lb 14 oz,  LOP 13 ¾ ”

History: After the most improved Mauser of “standard” length (the Winchester pre-64 Model 70), Sako was the first to move into the modern world and design the length of the action to match the length of the cartridges.  And for their design, they also introduced the double square bridge receiver with integral dovetails to accept clamp-on rings without drilling and tapping for the need to add after-market bases.

Their first action was the diminutive Mauser later to become popularly known as the Vixen, for the little .222 Rem cartridge. With its success, the next action size was this intermediate action, which became known as the Forester, again smaller than the “standard” Mauser length, but adapted for the intermediate length cartridges made famous by Winchester in the ‘50s: the .243 Win., the .308 Win, and others.

This is the “best of the best” of Sako, whose actions were used in the Belgium Browning Safari, Medallion and Olympian Grade High-Powers, Colt Coltsmans, and even by John Rigby of London when an intermediate or short action was requested.

Special Order: While it was standard issue for the Deluxe model to be issued without sights, this rifle was special ordered with a ramped front sight bead with hood as issued by Sako for their Standard or Hunting grade rifle and a quick-detachable aperature rear sight.  The ramp features the same Sako cross hatching as found on the receiver bridges. The aperature sight still accompanies the rifle while a period Leupold VXII 3-9x42 scope in mint condition has been mounted with Sako’s quick-detachable 1” rings of the same period, machined to fit the Sako receiver dovetails.

*Pre-Garcia rifles have a third bolt locking lug.

Priced here with scope, rings and aperature sight, $2,450.00
