The Sportsman (model also used by Rem to designate certain semi auto shotguns) was the discount store model: Its quality was uncomrimised and is the same gun mechanically as the 742 and later 7400 and model 4 however it has a hard wood uncheckered stock set thereby saving production costs. The following is a reprint from a review: "emington Sportsman 74 Auto Rifles: 1984 - 1987
Remington Arms introduced an affordably priced semi-auto hunting rifle in 1984 called the Sportsman 74 Auto which was chambered in the ever popular caliber of 30-06 Sprg. This rifle is similar in appearance and design to its more expensive counterpart, the model 7400, while having some cost cutting features that did not detract from its safety and reliability such as simpler open sights and an uncheckered hard wood (Birch) butt stock and forearm. The European market received this fabulous hunting rifle as well but they preferred it in the 7mm chambering known as 280 Rem. The Sportsman 74 Auto enjoyed a short production life of only four years when it was discontinued in 1987."
These were made in the old Illion NY Plant and not the later junk when remington quality deteriorated.
It is in largely new cond except for a small area of pitting near the front sight.
It comes with an excellent US Made Redfield Tracker scope (socpe alone is worth approx $ 150.00 but is included free with the rifle) and see thru mounts that allow access to the factory front and rear site should the scope beocme blocked at a critical moment with snow or rain or fog.
