COLT 1849 POCKET MODEL First Type Percussion Revolver .31 cal., 5 shot, 6 in. octagon barrel, with hinged loading lever, blue metal barrel and cylinder with color case hardened frame, lever and hammer, grip straps and trigger guard of brass (silver plated), stagecoach hold-up scene engraved on the cylinder. Serial number = 179,249. The serial number matches on all locations (including the wedge) except for the loading lever which is numbered 435. Serial number range = 12,000 to 340,000. Manufactured 1850 - 1873. This gun was manufactured in 1860. Factory standard grips are of the one-piece, smooth, varnished, straight-grained walnut variety. Engraved on the back strap with original gun owner's name. This gun could have been carried during the Civil War (1861 - 1865). Soldiers on both sides purchased these pistols with their own funds. They carried the 1849 Pocket models for close combat situations. Two-line address on the top of the barrel reads: "Address Sam Colt, Hartford, CT". Left side of trigger guard stamped with "G". Colt patent mark on left side of frame. Sometimes called the "hideout revolver", the 1849 Pocket Colt, was the most widely produced of all Colt percussion arms. It also became the best-selling handgun in the world during the entire 19th century. There are approximately 200 variations of this gun. City dwellers in the East mainly purchased the five shooters for travel “insurance” and home protection. But many of these Pocket Colts also went west for California’s Gold Rush. Colt made the 1849 Pocket Model in barrel lengths of three, four, five and six inches. The four-inch and five-inch barrels were the most popular, and the six-inch barreled version appears to be the scarcest model produced and can be more difficult to find. During its 23 years of production, Colt’s Hartford facility manufactured about 320,000 Colt Pocket Models, while another 11,000 were produced at the plant in London, England. One example of the acceptance of the Pocket Revolvers is found with the Baltimore Police Department, which was the first department in the country to issue guns to their officers. The guns they issued were Colt Model 1849s. The scene on the 1849 Pocket is that of a stagecoach robbery. The focal point is the stagecoach drawn by four horses. A woman in a dress is seen framed in the doorway of the side of the coach. The driver is standing alongside wielding his pistol against multiple assailants as the horses rear and struggle against their harnesses. Several of the bandits lay dying on the ground, one tries to control the horses, two are running away and one is in the process of falling dead after being shot.
One of the original 5 percussion cap nipples on the cylinder is missing. Buyer can easily screw on a replacement nipple using a special tool. Hammer does not advance the cylinder in full cock. The hand which connects to the hammer could be jammed by small pieces of percussion caps that fall into the action. Otherwise, the hand needs to be replaced. The head of the screw above the wedge on the left side has been sheared off.
