Standard length for this caliber was 30" and standard was also "plain trigger." The factory letter verifies caliber, barrel, trigger etc. Additionally, this rifle comes with a hand written letter stating "This rifle ," (serial number listed) , "was owned by Gene Shiels- Mannetonas-Mannitoba, Canada, used as a target and hunting rifle. First elk 20 Oct. 1912. (under forend)" also "M. L. Dedrick- Winnipeg Mannitoba 30 Mar. 80 (under butt plate)" This is all neatly written under the forend and butt plate. This rifle shows excellent deep barrel blue with crisp markings. The rear barrel sight dovetail has a blank filler in it and the front sight is a short blade that is windage adjustable. It is fitted with a Lyman tang sight. The receiver sides and receiver ring show vivid case colors. The upper sides and bottom of the lever also show fine case color as does the upper tang around the hammer and tang sight. The set trigger functions properly and retains the adjustment screw. Butt stock and forend are excellent. The bore is sharp, bright and excellent! Only 1,703 1885 Single Shot rifles were made in .40-82 (Compared to 11,174 for .32-40, and 7,596 for .38-55, and 3,032 for .45-70). This rifle has it all: Scarce caliber, extra length barrel, set trigger, superb condition, family history and all verified by a factory letter! (note: the dark spots on the receiver sides are remnants of the protective lacquer applied by the factory!)
