The Smith & Wesson Model 15-4 Revolver, also known as the K-38 Combat Masterpiece, is a six-shot double-action on a medium-sized K-frame. The Model 15 is a shorter barrel version of the Smith & Wesson Model 14 Target Masterpiece and was produced from 1949 until 1999. In 1956, the U.S. Air Force's Strategic Air Command Elite Guard commissioned the "K-38 Combat Masterpiece", adding to a list of Smith & Wesson's accolades and achievements. The primary innovations of the 15-4 not found in prior editions include a relocation of the gas ring from yoke to cylinder and the elimination of a pinned barrel. This revolver bears a smooth, dark walnut grip with checkering a Smith & Wesson medallions, contoured thumb rest on the left-side, color case hardened trigger and hammer, and a blued finish to the frame, cylinder and barrel. The right-side of the barrel is marked "38 S.&W. Special CTG.", along with "Made in U.S.A. - Marcas Registradas - Smith & Wesson - Springfield, Mass." appearing beneath the cylinder.
