Description:
This bayonet measures the standard 21 inches overall with an 18 inch straight blade and a 3 inch socket. The locking ring spins free. It is a triangular blade with "US" stamped on the base of the blade (ricasso). It has some corrosion at the tip and some bluing wear on the socket but retains about 80% original bluing.

The Scabbard and Frog are interesting!  The top of the scabbard has a 7/8" white leather collar sewn on with a 2 ½" long 7/8" wide tab.  (The meaning of this add on perhaps can be found in one or more of the bayonet reference books which I don’t own.) The tip of the scabbard is wrapped in black tape.  This was done fifty or more years ago by a previous owner.  An adventurous new owner might remove the tape and try to fix the problem with modern adhesives eliminating the need for the tape. At the top of the scabbard is stamped the date “1886" and the number “2559".  (Is this a model number or maybe a serial number?)

The frog (belt sheath to hold scabbard) is damaged on the back side as shown in one of the photos. The front side is stamped “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” (located in Watervliet, NY). The common “U.S.” is not present I believe by design as there is no place to attach it. Why?  Another question for the books!

Pricing! Looking at the prices of many different 45-70 Springfield bayonets on different wed sites, I concluded that $155 or $160 was a very fair price for this clean bayonet with 80% original bluing.  The frog though having a couple of issues was complete and interesting enough to be worth $35 or $40 in itself hence my asking price of $190. I believe this is a good value for a bayonet collector, an owner of a Springfield 45-70 looking for a matching bayonet or someone who wants a to own a nice piece of American History that will only go up in value. PRICE CUT FROM $195 to $145 plus shipping.  SALE PENDING
