Description:
SPECIAL ORDER WHITNEY-KENNEDY LARGE FRAME .45-60 OCTAGON RIFLE WITH CASE HARDENED RECEIVER. This rifle with serial number  I 8xx is listed  as having a case colored receiver and forend in the book by Dale A. Olson which lists numerous Whitney rifles and configurations. This rifle has the later "loop" lever (indicating a manufacture date between 1883-1886 when the model was discontinued) and 28" barrel with crescent butt plate. The receiver is now a mottled silver/gray with excellent screws that still show blue. The loading gate also shows some good blue. The barrel has the usual "WHITNEYVILLE ARMORY CT USA" markings and .45-60 caliber stamping ahead of the receiver. The barrel is an even aged blue/plum and the mag tube is plum/brown. There is a crack in the upper tang at the extreme back end on each side of the tang screw where the metal is thin- small and minor and probably welded at some time in the past- you have to look carefully to see it. Stock is generally fine and the butt plate has the correct sliding brass door cleaning rod trap. The forend is fine with one small typical crack about an inch long coming forward from the bottom left of the receiver that goes nowhere. Action is tight and the bore shows strong rifling and is only a bit dark. Buckhorn rear sight with blade front sight. Quite a bit more scarce than the small frame .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20 Whitney-Kennedy rifles. Unusual with case colored/case hardened receiver. These rifles showed such high quality that Winchester bought them out and discontinued production to eliminate the competition!
