Description:
This is a very lightly-used Smith & Wesson Model 17-4 .22 caliber revolver with an 8 & 3/8ths" inch barrel complete with everything it left the factory with.  This S&W has probably had less than 50 rounds fired thru it since it was new, but was in long term storage for several decades where it acquired a touch of surface rust in a few places which we removed.  As it sits now it is still very attractive and clean gun with perfect mechanics with the original finish rating 95 to 96%.  This would be the PERFECT Model 17 for someone who wants an investment that they can take out and shoot without feeling bad about it.  The S&W Model 17 was first offered in 1957-58 as a numbered model after previously being known only as the K-22 Masterpiece.  This was S&W's top-of-the-line regular-production .22 caliber revolver.  This DA/SA K-frame model was offered in a blue finish only and in 3 barrel lengths of 4", 6", and 8 & 3/8ths" inches.  During it's exceptionally long production run it went thru 8 engineering changes, with the Model 17-7 being the last.  The Smith & Wesson Model 17 has become one of the all-time classic S&W Models, popular with both shooters and collectors due to their excellent fit and finish, exceptional reliability, and superb accuracy.  As mentioned before, this particular example was made in 1981 and is fit with the 8 & 3/8ths inch barrel.  The factory gloss blue finish rates 95% plus, with no actual wear from use rather some spots where surface rust formed when in storage.  These deductions consist of some darker areas on the matted top strap, some very light pitting on the upper right edge of the barrel rib, the faintest of drag-lines around the cylinder, and some scattered pin-prick spots on the frame and barrel which are only visible under close examination.  As you can see from the pictures, none of these deductions really stand out or are eyesores, the gun still has a very clean look to it overall.  The case colors on the hammer and trigger are still bright and handsome rating 98%+, with strong color showing on all surfaces and no fading or pitting.  The bore in this Smith is mirror-bright and perfect, it is for all intents and purposes brand-new.  The rifling is sharp fromt he forcing cone to the crown of the muzzle, and there is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections of any kind.  The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as clean and perfect.  The original factory grips on this gun are in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or visible wear.  The checkering on both sides is crisp and clean, and there is no soiling or staining.  Both grips are a perfect match to each other in every way, and the right grip panel is stamped with the matching last 4 digits of the serial number, as-was the practice for this vintage production.  As mentioned earlier, this Model 17-4 has absolutely perfect mechanics.  The action is smooth, precise, and perfectly in-time no matter how the gun is operated, whether it is worked fast or extremely slow, double-action or single-action.  All of the controls are in like-new, perfect working order.  The trigger is very good for a factory trigger, breaking with a light pull without any slop, grit, or excessive travel.  This Smith & Wesson Model 17-4 should function just as perfectly today as the day it left the factory over 40 years ago.  This Smith is also as complete as it could possibly be, with literally everything it shipped from the factory with.  The original box and all of the contents are in excellent condition, including the original factory end-label serial-numbered to the gun.  This Smith would be a superb addition to any gun collection in general, or a focused S&W collection.
