Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique REMINGTON NEW MODEL NAVY Revolver .36 Cal. Single Action

c1864 mfr. Popular Sidearm!

Here we present an antique Remington New Model Navy Revolver, made circa 1864. The New Model Navy (.36 caliber) was a slightly scaled down version of the Army (.44 caliber) revolver. The Army was manufactured beginning in 1863 with a total production of approximately 132,000, many of which were acquired by the US Ordnance Department for issue during the American Civil War. The Remington New Model Army represents the second-most number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. Meanwhile, the Navy model saw only about 28,000 made, and only about 4,300 were purchased by the US Navy. None of these were Ordnance marked for whatever reason.

One of the features that made this revolver desirable was the fully enclosed frame. Samuel Colt’s famous revolvers almost all had open top frames, which sometimes became loose or wobbly at the frame/barrel connection. The Remington did not have this issue and it would become the standard design going forward, with Colt adopting this for their famous Single Action Army. These Navies are excellent revolvers, very well designed and manufactured, and their slightly reduced size probably work better for the average hand.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. Excellent action. Bright, reflective bore with sharp, deep rifling. Fine walnut grips with minimal wear. This is a beautifully preserved example of the Remington Navy—one of the best revolvers of the percussion period!
