Description:

Whereas post-1913 L.C. Smith 20-gauge Field Grade guns are common, pre-1913 20-gauge No. 00 guns are not.  Hunter Arms produced approximately 10 times as many of the former as the latter.  Of the only 3,382 20-gauge No. 00 guns made, given their age and the fact that field grade guns were worked hard, one would expect that relatively few still exist.

This No. 00 20-gauge, which was manufactured in 1910, is restored to a condition similar to what it would have been after a couple of years uses by the original owner.  It has 28” Armor-steel barrels with 2-5/8” chambers.  The right barrel is choked IC (.008) and the left Mod (.015).  The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9” from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .032/.030/.032, and at the middle of the barrel are .035/.035/.036.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .033/.028/.031 and .041/.035/.035, respectively.  The bore diameters of both barrels measured at 9” from the breech are .615”.  The outside diameter of both barrels at the muzzle are .685”.  The receiver is re-case hardened by Victor’s Legacy Custom Gunsmithing, Fairport, OH.  The bores and exteriors of the barrels are without any flaws.

The beautiful English-walnut stock has a 14-5/8” LOP to the end of a Pachmayr recoil pad.  The DAC is 1-5/8” and the DAH is 2-7/8”.  The stock and forend are reconditioned by drawing out accumulated petroleum-based oils and restoring the natural oils through the application of a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish.  Oil damaged wood at the rear of both sidelocks is replaced and the 16-point flat-top checkering recut and extended.  The gun weighs 5 pounds 15 ounces. Both triggers pull at 5 pounds.  The gun locks up tightly.  All serial numbers, 2584, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired on a number of occasions using both low-pressure 2-1/2” shells manufactured by RST and standard 2-3/4” target shells.  However, as for any vintage shotgun over 100 years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing.  The gun carries a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and all shipping costs.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Steve at 703-625-4830.
