These US Cavalry guns were sold back to Colt.
Colt shortened the barrels to 4 13/16. Then they were sold back on the civilian market.
This was back when the US government actually tried to save money and balance the budget. Back when politicians had some sort of scruples.

This old gun still has a good bore (7). and strong action. Locks up tight. Made in the 1884. Some cowboy did a good job checkering the wood grips on a long winter weekend.
How do you like my upside down photos.?? I’m going to employ one of my grandkids to to teach me how to fix this one day.
All numbers match. Including barrel and cylinder. Barrel address is almost gone. Can see parts of it.
