The National Gendarmerie was a French institution of military police that had both local and foreign policing duties as well as military ones. This example is in .69 Caliber and is rifled with a simple V-shaped rear sight. It was shorter than the full-length infantry musket both in barrel and stock, making it lighter and handier, especially if on horseback. The lockplate is marked “Mre Imp.ale / de Mutzig”, indicating manufacture at the French Arsenal located in Mutzig. There are armory proofs and acceptance marks throughout. This one makes a great study in French arsenal markings. This rifle would have been in service during the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Franco-Prussian War (1871), and the during the Paris Commune (1871). This rifle is also the prototypical Continental Rifled Musket that was imported to the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861-1865). These were also bought and issued by the Union Army in small quantities as described in the book Civil War Guns by William Edwards on page 262. This one comes from the Weller Collection of Princeton, New Jersey and still bears the numbered inventory tag. The overall condition is near fine. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: .69 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
