Description: Winchester Model 1873 rifle in caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40. This is a Second Model, having the dust cover rail secured to the top of the receiver by two screws and the external trigger pin. It was specially-ordered with a 26" octagon barrel, 2" longer than standard, which is considerably rarer than the 28" and 30" lengths. It also has a fully-functioning single set trigger. Standard blued and case-hardened finish, plain walnut stocks, and open sights. Cody verification sheet verifies the configuration, shows it warehoused on 4/13/1882 and shipped 5/24/1883 to order number 4482. Cody sheet will be provided to the buyer. I have also ordered an official factory letter from Cody and that will be given to the buyer also once I receive it. CONDITION: Receiver and mag tube retain 50% bright original blue, the mag tube having it on the protected upper half. The bottom of the mag tube and the octagon barrel show 10% original finish remaining that has turned patina. Loading gate retains 50% original bright fire blue. Hammer and lever show traces of the original case colors. Butt plate and fore end cap are patina, with some surface crud on the butt plate that I did not attempt to clean. Set trigger works perfectly and the original adjustment screw is intact. The action is tight and the half cock safety works as designed. Hammer will follow the lever forward to the "safe" position when the action is cycled. Bore is very good with very minor roughness, plenty of strong rifling, no rings, no deep pits or craters, about an 8 of 10 and spins a bullet very well. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, just honest usage nicks and dings. No cleaning rods are present in the butt trap. The brass trap door and brass carrier block have turned a dark mustard color, remaining uncleaned. A Rocky Mountain front sight is present in the front sight dovetail, and the rear sight dovetail retains the original short-style 2nd Model rear sight with the checkered edges. Overall this one grades NRA Antique Very Good and will make a fine shooter and collector. TERMS: FREE SHIPPING to the Continental United States.
