Description:
Thought to be a capture at Harper's Ferry in April of 1861 when rifle, carbine, and pistol/carbine manufacturing machinery along with inventory were transferred to Richmond and Fayetteville. The 58 cal. x 12" smoothbore barrel is unmarked with no provision for sterruped ramrod. Dovetail for rear sight is located only 1/8" behind tang and barrel joint. Stock milled for button head ramrod as shown. High hump lockplate is not machined for tape primer system and is unmarked. Shape is slightly rounded at back and internals vary from finished pistols and is likely a rifle lock but not an 1855 Springfield. Safety notch is inoperable but full cock is fine. Iron backstrap is not milled for rifle stock hardware. Brass front inside strap extends to brass butt cap with 3/4" piece added to match milled stock. Brass barrel band is formed from sheet brass.  Nose cap is cast iron. Cleanout screw is a repro.
Gun is probably made from parts captured at Harper's Ferry and finished at the Richmond armory. See "WGE" inspector stamp and "RICHMOND . VA" stock stamps. Photo of original Richmond musket lock is shown for letter comparison.
