Description:
Here is a very nice all-original and honest Belgian-made Browning Auto-5 Sweet Sixteen shotgun with a 28" inch ventilated rib barrel choked "Modified".  This Sweet Sixteen has been used but remains in very good condition overall with excellent mechanics.  The semi-auto recoil-operated Belgian Browning Auto-5 shotgun is one of the all-time classics, sought-after by collectors and shooters alike.  Built by some of the best gunsmiths that FN employed at a time in which gunmaking was an art, the Auto-5 was designed with beautiful lines and a strong and reliable action.  The 16 gauge Sweet Sixteen model of the Auto-5 was first introduced in 1937 and remained in production until 1975, a testament to it's popularity and appeal.  Essentially a lightened version of the standard Auto-5 model, the Sweet Sixteen weighed 10 ounces lighter and a had a gold-finished trigger but otherwise looked the same.  It featured a high-polish blue finish, a scroll and floral engraved receiver, a polished bright bolt, a gold-finished trigger, and a checkered European Walnut pistol-grip stock set.  Various barrel lengths were offered as well as a pain, ventilated rib, or solid rib configuration.  This particular example is serial number 7S71038, manufactured in 1967.  As mentioned before, it has been used but remains in very good condition overall, with almost all of the deductions coming from poor storage condition rather than actual wear from use.  The gloss blue factory finish is still very attractive, bright, and uniform, with no real finish wear in the typical spots on the underside of the receiver, the high edges, or either the upper and lower tangs.  The negatives come from some scattered tiny handling marks, some scattered speckling on the tangs from prior removed rust, a spot of minor discoloration on the upper edge of the receiver to the right of the matted sighting channel, and some scattered spots of very minor pitting/discoloration on the barrel that are all concentrated on the first 6" inches ahead of the receiver.  As you can see from the pictures, none of the deductions stand out as eyesores or bad spots that detract much from the attractive overall look of the gun.  The bright polished bolt body is still bright and clean (any brown color visible is old dried oil that can be cleaned), and the face of the bolt is near pristine with no primer "ring" or visible erosion/wear.  All of the factory markings and engraving are still crisp and sharp on this gun with the exception of the barrel markings which are much lighter, this is typical of guns made in this time period.  All of the screws and pins in this Auto-5 are original and in excellent condition.  The factory gold finish on the trigger is in excellent condition and bright, free from any wear or plating loss.  As this original gold finish on the trigger is typically the very first area to show wear from use, this is another indicator that this Sweet Sixteen has been used very little.  The bore in the 28" inch vent rib barrel is mirror-bright and pristine, free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or imperfections of any kind.  The vent rib is free from any dents or repairs, and the rib to barrel joint is 100% intact and tight.  The factory stock set on this Sweet Sixteen is in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage.  There are zero cracks in the forearm, even in the spot where you most often see them on the bottom edge where it butts up against the receiver.  The checkering still looks good and the factory-installed Browning/FN-branded buttplate is in excellent condition.  The action on this Sweet Sixteen is slick and smooth with strong spring pressure.  When the bolt is released it slams into battery with the barrel perfectly.  All of the controls are n perfect working order, including the safety and magazine cut-off switch.  This Browning Sweet Sixteen should function just like-new, as the internals show very little to zero mechanical wear.  If you have been looking for a handsome yet affordable Belgian Sweet Sixteen that you could be proud to carry afield and shoot, this example would be an excellent choice.  As long as you take proper care of it, this Browning should continue to perform just as well as a long-term investment as it will in the field.
