Description:
Indian Wars Era Burnside Rifle Co., US Contract Spencer 1865 SRC, .50 Spencer, s/n 14959, carbine, brl length 20", very good plus condition, lever action falling block. This is a wonderful example of High Condition Indian Wars Era U.S. Contract Spencer Manufactured in 1865 to fulfill US Government contract by The Burnside Rifle Co. this example is in very nice condition with a very bright shiny bore, folding graduated rear ladder sight graduated to 9 with a block inverted V front fixed sight and having the Stabler magazine cutoff. The walnut stock and forend are unsanded showing nice crisp cartouches left side at saddle bar mount both vertically and horizontally along with a "CSL" in the top of the wood just forward of butt plate on top. Inspector marks "C" found on top of butt plate with "S" located left side of the receiver right side of lever and left flat of saddle ring mount. Flat with "M" right side of back action lock an "L" located left side of hammer flat having checkered spur and "L" left side of lever flat. Front of the receiver marked laterally is "MODEL/1865" with the four line address marking "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT'D MARCH 6 1860/MANUF"D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.". Case coloring present on receiver and hammer with colors having darkened mostly to brown patina but showing traces of different shades of blue throughout. Screw head next to Stabler cutoff and barrel band retaining spring and barrel still retaining original bluing some more than others. Left side barrel flat at receiver is inspector marked with what appears to be a "CEW" faint but present. Bore shines very bright with nice rifling showing some light pitting present.
