Description:
This LC Smith field-grade 16-gauge gun, which was manufactured in 1929, has 30-inch barrels, as did only 12% of Hunter Arms production of this grade and gauge.  While the barrel length may make this gun uncommon, what makes it special is that it has been so well maintained..  Field grade guns were worked hard in their day.  And, as they were passed down from generation to generation, field grade guns did not have the extensive engraving, fine Damascus-steel barrels, and burled-walnut stocks to proclaim their financial value and motivate quality care and preservation.

This gun has approximately 90% coverage of original case color.  Some of it, especially on the left side, is brilliant. The sideplates, receiver, and bottom metal have no pitting or scratches.  The wood is in exceptional condition.  The originality and condition of old wood is best determined by looking behind the locks.  As shown in the last picture, the wood in this stock head shows no old repairs, no petroleum-based oil contamination, and no cracks of other flaws.  Moreover, it looks exactly like what century-old wood that has been protected should look like.  The checkering on the wrist and forend wood has retained its points, which is unusual.  The body of the stock shows a few light handling marks.  The natural oils that were originally applied to preserve the wood appear to have been periodically refreshed, which is probably why it has survived in this condition.  The DAC is 1-5/8” and the DAH is 2-7/8”.  Length of pull is 14-3/4” to the end of a period Jostrom recoil pad.

The barrels have 2-3/4” chambers.  The constriction of right barrel is .022” (IM) and of the left is .035 (XF).  The bore diameters of the barrels measured at 9” from the breech are .666” and .664” respectively.  The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9” from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .040/.045/.045, and at the middle of the barrel are .042/.040/.042.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .045/.042/.045 and .040/.047/.045, respectively.  The bores are bright.  The bluing has been refreshed at some point in the gun’s history.  It does not appear to have been fully refinished, however, given the sharpness of the lettering and the scattered freckles underneath the finish, as can be seen in the close-up pictures of the barrels.  This gun weighs 6 pounds 9 ounces; the FW on the water table indicates it is a featherweight.  The right trigger pulls at 4-1/2 pounds and the left at 5-1/2 pounds.  The gun locks up tightly.  All serial numbers, 118414, match.  As with all Doublegun Preservation, LLC listings, this shotgun has had a full preventive maintence service, a $250 value.

The price does not include the shipping cost, which is paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  The gun has been fired on the range using standard target loads.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is strongly recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing.  The gun carries a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and all shipping costs.
