Description:
If you have been looking for a "centerpiece" for your Remington Model 85 Double Deringer collection this is it!  This is a very scarce Type II "Slant Line" model made from 1890 until 1898 that is in truly spectacular and unfired all-original condition.  This beautiful Remington has NEVER been on the collector's market before as this Double Deringer was bought brand-new by the grandfather of the lady that brought it into our store for her grandmother.  Her grandmother was scared of it, and never carried it out of the house despite her grandfather's wishes.  She remembered seeing it as a child in her grandmother's bedside table wrapped in a stocking, and then later in her mother's dresser after her grandmother passed.  Both her grandmother and mother had always told her that it had never been shot be either of the women, their husbands, or anyone else in the family, and she was not to touch it until it was her's.  Once it was left to her by her mother, she kept it wrapped up in storage until bringing it into our store to sell.  As you can see from the pictures, this is really a beautiful example and is perhaps the nicest example we have had in 20 years or more.  The original factory nickel plating is mirror-bright and exceptionally clean, rating 93 to 95%.  The minor deductions come from just a touch of pin-prick speckling in spots right around the edge of the grips, a tiny little spot of corrosion just in front of the extractor slide button, and a few tiny little spots of minor corrosion below the extractor on the bottom barrel which are only visible with the Deringer's barrels swung-open.  None of these deductions detract much, if anything, from the amazingly clean overall look of this Remington.  The bright Niedner or "Fire" blue factory finish on the hammer, trigger, and action lever/screw is also still intact on this piece, showing only some very minor thinning/wear on the trigger face, the high-edges of the action lever and screw, and the lower right side of the hammer where it makes contact with the frame when worked (this is only visible with the hammer at full-cock).  The  contrast of this vivid gloss blue with the bright mirror-like finish of the nickel plating is very handsome.  The factory slant line address marking on this Double Deringer is sharp and perfect.  This "slant line" style of marking with no space between the "C" and "O" of "CO."was only used between 1890 and 1898 and is the single most accurate way to date these little pistols, as the serial numbers were repeated once reaching "9999".  This particular Double Deringer is serial number "3".  There were only about 14,000 of this variation made out of more than 112,000 Double Deringers made during the production run, making it a very scarce variation.  The bores in this Remington further set it apart from the vast majority of Double Deringers you will see.  Despite being made at a time when black powder and corrosive primers were still the standard, this Deringer has pristine, mint bores!  They are both mirror-bright and slick with sharp rifling from the chamber to the crown of the muzzle.  There is ZERO pitting, wear, or imperfections of any kind in either bore.  The chambers are just as slick with perfectly defined shoulders where the rifling begins.  The original checkered black hard rubber grips on this Double Deringer are just as excellent as the rest of the gun.  Both sides are free from chips, cracks, repairs, or major dings/damage.  The only thing keeping them from being absolutely pristine is a tiny spot on each side of slightly flattened checkering where the gun rests when laid on it's side.  This is only visible under extremely close inspection when held at the right angle in the right light.  Both original grip panels are perfectly fit to the gun and tight to the frame with no wiggle, and the original grip screw and escutcheon are both in superb condition.  As you would imagine with a gun that has never been fired and that has spent it's entire life in clothing drawers, the mechanics and top hinge are in like-new, perfect working order.  The hinge is 100% solid and tight, with no cracks or stretching.  This Remington locks up perfectly with zero play in it, and even with the barrels swung-up and open there is zero movement side-to-side within the hinge.  The hammer still has both the safety position and full-cock notches intact, and the mainspring feels very strong with lots of pressure.  The hammer-mounted automatic firing pin swaps from top to bottom and back again when cycled, just like-new with very loud audible clicks.  The original spur-style trigger works perfectly and breaks cleanly, and the right side frame-mounted action lever snaps into place securely when locking the barrels closed.  There is NO doubt that this Remington Double Derringer would still function just as well today as the day it left the factory over 123 years ago!  All in all, this "Slant Line" Remington Model 85 Double Deringer has to be one of the nicest examples of it's type in existence, and would be a superb addition to any general antique American weapons collection or specialized Remington Deringer collection.  It would be all but impossible to upgrade from this special piece in any respect!  As an antique, this can be shipped directly to the buyer's home, no FFL needed!
