Description:
***   REDUCED   ***   Handsome Wm. Evans 12 bore ejector sidelock cased in a compact leather toe-in case with snap caps, oil bottle and cleaning rod. Elaborate best engraving and very nicely figured English walnut. Double triggers and disc set strikers. Serial number is 4450 indicating a manufacture date of 1897-8. William Evans learned the guntrade at  Purdeys and later struck out on his own. He quickly garnered a reputation for making high quality doubles in the very competitive gunmaking environment in London. Gun weighs 6lb 7oz.   ***   The 28” replacement nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges and were proofed at the London proof house in 1980. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The blacking is in very good condition. The bores are shiny but there is a slight bit of frosting in both barrels. The right barrel is bored 0.734 with a constriction of 0.008 for a Light Improved Cylinder. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. The left barrel is bored 0.734 and has a constriction of 0.022 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.026.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut. The checkering is crisp. There are a few handling marks from normal usage. The stock dimensions are 14-1/2” including a 7/8” ebony butt pad by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Neutral cast. Like many guns of this era it has some slight pitting on the breech face.   ***   This Wm Evans double is a handsome and great handling double made in the 1890’s. It has all the hallmarks of a high quality sidelock with great engraving, nicely figured stock, and disc set strikers. A great English sidelock for a reasonable price.   ***   Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense.
