CLASSIC SEDGLEY SPORTING RIFLE BUILT ON A ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1903 SPRINGFIELD ACTION, .30-06, #342XXX. R. F. Sedgley operated a custom gun making business in Philadelphia, PA from 1916 until his death in 1938. He was known for buying surplus actions and using them to build very high quality sporting rifles. The company is best known for buying surplus '03 Springfield actions, annealing and re-heat treating them before refinishing and then rebarrelling with Winchester barrels. The barrels are unmarked except for the R. F. Sedgley Inc., Phila. PA USA stampings in very small letters. There is also a caliber designation on the barrel plus a "circle S" proof mark. Usually, the receiver ring markings are ground off. Those that retain the original receiver markings that I've observed have all been Rock Island Armory marked actions. This is an fine example that has never been drilled and tapped for a scope or had a recoil pad added- most seem to be found this way. The walnut stock is excellent with the correct grip cap and checkered steel butt plate. It retains the factory installed Lyman 48 receiver sight with the tiny flip-down eye piece intact and hooded front sight. The standard 24" barrel has a bright excellent bore and the action is crisp. Sharp blue overall with the bolt handle and cocking piece/bolt left in the "white" as it should be and has the correct factory swivels. A really super example.
