First introduced in 1895 the improved Savage model 1899 rifle with its sleek form, fast lever action, and rotary magazine quickly became a favorite with American riflemen in the early 20th century. It featured an internal hammer and advanced features like a cocking indicator and even a counter to show the number of cartridges in the magazine. It was a quite sophisticated design and is still popular with sportsmen. Early models have become very desirable among Savage firearms collectors and those interested in classic American laver action firearms. While primarily designed for early high velocity smokeless power cartridges with pointed bullets a limited number of Savage Model 1899 rifles were built in .38-55 and .32-40 caliber. The .38-55 was developed in the 1880s for Ballard rifles and proved an excellent cartridge for both hunting and competition target shooting. Rifles in .38-55 were built by Marlin, Remington, and Winchester and this cartridge was a favorite with custom rifle makers like Harry Pope. Evidently a few sophisticated shooters wanted this new Savage rifle but insisted it be built in their favorite caliber. The .38-55 was one of the few 1880s cartridges that achieved excellent performance with either smokeless powder or black powder and has many devotees to this day. This particular Model 1899 in .38-55 caliber has a special order 1/2 octagon barrel and the early - pre 1905 - features of a rectangular block cocking indicator atop the breechblock and a straight profile lower butt stock profile. This Savage has seen little use and is in fine to excellent as found ‘attic’ condition. The barrel retains 97% factory blued finish with no edge wear and some light aging. The frame retains 75% high polish factory blue with the balance (sides of frame) slightly faded and aged drifting toward plum color. The frame shows little or no actual wear with sharp edges, etc. The screws retain nearly all their high polish blue. The bore and mechanical functions are excellent. The stocks are in excellent condition retaining 95% original ‘varnish’ finish with some slight handling wear on the bottom of the forearm just ahead of the frame. Rear and front sights are factory original. Please see all detail and overall pictures. This is a high condition example of an early Savage Model 1899 in a seldom encountered cartridge and configuration suitable for inclusion in a fine collection of Savage Model 1899 rifles and/or American antique lever action rifles in general. This Savage 1899 is fresh to the market from a New England estate.
