One of the most historical of the S&W large frame revolvers with most of the limited production going west for the Indian Wars and cavalry issue. Some Schofields were still in service as late as the 1890s for the Spanish American War. This example is a smooth gray overall with excellent sharp markings including the "U.S." on the butt and varied inspector initials. The serial number on the frame matches the cylinder and inside the grips. Both grip panels are solid without chips and each retains a faint but visible cartouche. Only the pinned front sight appears to be a copper blade replacement. The action is tight, the ejector mechanism works correctly and the bore is surprisingly excellent. Correct and original length 7" barrel. Many of these were sold as surplus and had barrels shortened. Nice appearance.
