Description:
This is an original, turn of the last century pair of Galilean binoculars with original leather wraps and about 75% of the original black enamel finish on the lens housings. There is dark brown oxidation present on the objective lens housing, but the leather on both scopes is intact. The optics are cloudy but still serviceable and "THE ROYAL GUARDS / S.A. 1901" is engraved on both ocular lens tubes (only visible when the lenses are focused for long distance). The "Royal Guards" refers to the Grenadier Guards, who had two battalions in South African service during the war (2nd and 3rd). This is a fine piece of British Boer War memorabilia, and would make a splendid addition to any collection.
