Description: General Specs: Colt, Year 1879, .45 Boxer, 36.8 oz Serial Number: 3388 Here we have an excellent antique COLT MODEL OF 1878 DOUBLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER, sn3388 built in 1879 and shipped to Colt of London at their Pall Mall address. These early London address Army revolvers have high collector interest and some unusual features. This gun was shipped in caliber .45 Boxer and is so stamped on the left forward side of the trigger guard. There were a total of 51,210 Model of 1878 double action revolvers produced with only 6417 going to the London facility. Only 2390 were shipped in .45 Boxer, and only 1653 with blue finish and 5 ½” barrel. There are very few Colt revolvers that were built like this one. We have thoroughly examined this Colt and it is correct as shipped and documented by the Colt Archives letter that is included in this sale. The gun is in original factory condition with no restorations and is mechanically excellent and ready to take to the range. The bore is shiny and has strong bold rifling with only the slightest hint of frosting…truly incredible for a black powder revolver. The British proof marks and all stamps and lettering are clear and crisp. The grips are in excellent condition and original to the gun with strong checkering and only one small chip from the right grip. If you refer to Wilkerson’s definitive book, Colt’s Double Action Revolver, MODEL OF 1878, the author notes several facts that are relative to this revolver. He mentions the grips were made of hard rubber after 1878. He also notes that the cylinders of guns shipped to Colts of London were often swapped out because Colt of Hartford shipped guns with American calibers, a common occurrence in 1879 with the Model of 1878. Many of these .450 Boxer cylinders were bored out to accept the .45 Long Colt…this one is intact for the .450 Boxer. This Colt retains about 30% of the original factory blue, does not have any notable pitting or marring, and has never been polished or cleaned, leaving the finish a proper 141-year-old patina. The screws are excellent and there remains strong niter blue on the hammer and trigger. You will search long and hard to find a better London Address Colt Model of 1878 that is all intact and in awesome original condition to add to your Colt collection.
