Here we present an antique Steyr Greek Contract Gras Model 1874 Carbine, made circa 1880 in Steyr, Austria. In the mid 1870’s the Greeks had a great need for rifles. The rifle they adopted was an exact copy of the French Model 1874 Gras. At the time French production facilities were not producing foreign orders so the Greeks decided to purchase their Gras Rifles from Steyr in Austria. Steyr produced a total of 126,000 Greek Model 1874 Gras Rifles between 1876 and 1886.
The Gras Modèle 1874 M80 was a French service rifle of the 19th century. The Gras used by the French Army was an adaptation to metallic cartridge of the Chassepot breech-loading rifle by Colonel Basile Gras. The rifle was chambered in 11mm and used black powder centerfire cartridges. It was a robust and hard-hitting single shot weapon. It was replaced by the Lebel rifle in 1886, the first rifle to use smokeless gunpowder. In the meantime, about 400,000 French Gras rifles had been manufactured. The metallic-cartridge Gras was manufactured in response to the development of the metallic cartridge designed by Colonel Boxer in 1866 (Boxer cartridge), and the British 1870 Martini-Henry rifle. Those were soon emulated by the Germans with the 1871 Mauser.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is bright. The walnut stock is in very good shape with expected wear. “Y=1874” is stamped on the left receiver. “11880” is marked on the barrel. Numbers match and is even stamped onto the left butt plate. Markings are sharp. A truly wonderful antique for the collection.
