Description:
SOLD A very fancy, unusual ferringer sizedpercussion pistol that looks like a pepperbox with a deep fluted round barrel of about .54 cal, 2 1/8” ribbed barrel with an oxidized bore. The metal surfaces of this pistol are mostly a dark gray patina showing a few spots of light oxidation staining and some fine pinprick pitting. The upper tang is clearly marked “CLARKE / LEICESTER”, the sides of the frame are embellished with attractive English scrollwork and the hammer is chiseled into a fish head style. There is a very attractive German silver lion’s head grip cap, he looks a little peculiar however as the affixing screw slot has been utilized as the mouth. The smooth walnut grip remains in about very good condition showing a thin 1” crack at the top left edge, a few tiny chips around the edges and scattered dings. The grip is embellished with lovely silver wire inlay although unfortunately most of it has been lost, with a few sprigs, small leaves and a clover present on the backstrap and left side along with a blank monogram plate. The action is functional but the mainspring is rather weak. No doubt this pistol was quite attractive back in the day; and it still has plenty of character.
